This Muslim-American life: young adults’ activist, artistic voices
Follow through this six-story series on the lives of second-generation American Muslims.
Their parents’ generation may have kept a lower profile in the public sphere, but today’s young Muslim-Americans are taking an unashamed, activist approach to politics and other social concerns, working hard to engage across ethnic and religious lines.
Even as teens and young adults, they adopt political, international and humanitarian perspectives. Muslim student organizations, which once focused on planning holiday celebrations on college campuses, now also addresses broader issues of interfaith dialogue and global crises, from bombings in Gaza to healthcare availability.
“The younger kids are more religious, but also more civic-minded,” said Syed Ali, a sociology professor at Long Island University in Brooklyn, who researches second-generation Muslims. “They are very adamant about saying ‘I am a Muslim,’ but also adamant about saying ‘I am an American, and I have these rights.’”
In cities across the U.S., recent college grads work for nonprofit advocacy groups—helping these organizations stay connected with the largest segment of the Muslim-American population, those between 18 and 30, and lending their perspectives as members of the Muslim community who have grown up immersed in America’s contemporary culture.
“If you want to keep progressing, you have to keep a new generation coming in, constantly contributing to the dialogue,” said Hasan Dudar, a junior at the University of Toledo in Ohio who spent the summer interning at the Washington D.C. office of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, or MPAC. “If this organization is going to be run only by 50-year-olds, then 10 years from now it’s going to be stagnant, no relation to the community.”
Young Muslims are bringing together communities not only at mosques and Islamic centers, but also in everyday places: on online networks, Facebook groups, classrooms and city streets. Bound by shared experiences as Muslims in America, they’re more inclined to approach Islam in a broad and inclusive way.
“In our generation, there’s going to be a lot of intra-Islamic dialogue, whether it’s between different ethnic communities or even different sectarian communities,” Alejandro Beutel, 24, MPAC’s government liaison.
Alejandro is a walking, talking example of America’s growing multi-faith and multicultural movements. He’s half-Italian, half-Salvadorian, the son of a Jewish father and Catholic mother. When Alejandro converted to Islam six years ago, his family became “a trialogue” of religion, he said.
Not so surprisingly, Islam is the most diverse religious tradition in the country, bringing together African-Americans, South Asians, Arabs, whites and others. Two-thirds of America’s Muslim population comes from abroad, and the rest are native-born Muslims and converts, according to a 2007 report by the Pew Research Center.
Young Muslims say the challenge for their religion in the 21st century is to connect these groups in a meaningful way — with each other and with American society overall.
Ahlam Said, 23, said she learned the most about her own Muslim identity and the role of the Muslim community while attending DePaul University, a majority-white, majority-Catholic school in Chicago.
“There, at a Catholic university, I began to discover myself as Muslim in the sense of a larger community,” said Ahlam, who, influenced by DePaul’s emphasis on social justice, decided to work for a Muslim community-organizing group on Chicago’s South Side following her graduation a year ago.

“We want to mobilize the larger Muslim community around these issues. They have to stand for justice. It is our duty,” said Ahlam. “I know I’m going to be held accountable to a higher being one day, and I’ll be asked ‘What did you do? Did you stand by while your brother or your sisters struggled?’”
